Laptop running really slow

I have a lap top I would like some help getting back up to speed.

I had AVG2012 and the antivirus was perminantly disabled. I could not reenable it.

Jobs done so far..

1, Uninstalled AVG2012
2, installed & run CCleaner
3, Uninstalled pretty much every program
4, Disabled or deleted pretty much every startup process
5, Installed AVG2013

I assumed this should make it back as good as new

Still really slow to load and ie takes ages to respond.

I Have 2gb RAM which I think is enough as the laptop is only used for internet and homework.

Normally runs under 1gb usage.

attempted to run COMBOFIX but it hung at stage 4.

I have vista boot disk (both the Vista PRO & a upgrade anytime one) However the CD-KEY on the sticker is hard to read. I could reinstall but I'm worried I will get a couple of digits wrong and not be able to get my system back.

Not sure if its possible but is there a way of getting the licence key from the registry?

Or maybe a Microsoft - "check my licence key is valid site?" I have most of the key but my wife and I disagree on about 5 characters - not sure of the possible combinations but it think its probably 32 different combinations - which could be a nightmare.
