random intermittent scratch/pucker sound after install

Hi.

This is a problem I've had before. I think I may have lobotomized the computer to fix it last time. I figure now I'll give someone else a shot. I had no idea where it came from last time. This time I have an idea.

What happens:

Speakers issue short scratch/pucker sound in a somewhat random pattern, but with a frequency that may be tied to number of Firefox activity. It's the sort of sound that you might expect from an animated cat or paper-clip or something that Microsoft would have in the background for noobs, waiting to help you with some random Windows bug that they haven't bothered to explain yet. It'd be the sound it makes when it randomly paws at something to remind you it's there.

Where it may have come from:

I used an installer that was supposed to install Stanza Desktop onto my computer, and it didn't work: NP. It said it was successful: Sketchy, because installer opened one Firefox window up which was supposed to link to a download location, and then another opened up to say that the download wasn't there anymore. The file it was aiming for appeared to be correct, w/ Lexcycle name.
The installer also said that it would leave an icon on the desktop that I could later delete. This is also not true. Nothing there.
Shortly, if not immediately after this install, the sound began.
I had an older installer, and when I went to open the old installer, it gave me an odd looking couple of windows, not very installer- or professional-looking, that told me first it was loading, and second that I needed to get an updated installer. The updated installer is the one that I ran.

I ran AVG Anti-Virus free 2013, which didn't find anything. AVG was already on the computer, and had updated yesterday afternoon.

Any ideas?

Thanks
