I urgently need an answer to this problem

I posted the message below yesterday but before doing anything I need to know whether my computer's behaviour corresponds to a known virus infection. Please remember that my computer is useless in its present state.

Thank you very much for your help.

I'll try and describe my problem as best I can. I'm running Windows XP on an HP desktop small form PC. You will find the details in my profile. I'm writing this on my wife's portable which is a feat in itself (Windows 7 in French)... So, this morning everything was purring. I checked my mail as usual on Thunderbird mail, downloaded and opened a pdf document from a friend about the dangers of microwaves and plastic dishes. Closed the programme then decided to reopen it and presto. A black Adove Air box displaying this message appeared:

Application Install

Sorry, an error has occured. The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer file from the application author.

I didn't worry and downloaded a fresh copy of Thunderbird from Mozilla's site. When I tried to install it the fateful message appeared again. Worse: from that point on no application will start!
When I try to start a programme all I get is that box.
When I restart the PC the screen is literally bombarded by a succession of boxes...

I'm a PC user, not a technician. But I've spent 20 years with DHL and have used computers since 1982. But this, I have never seen. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

All the best,

Boyard
