PC HIJACKED at STARTUP

Hi folks,

Sorry to bother you but I can think of no other solutions at this point:

I have an Acer desktop PC running Win 7 Home premium edition. I have AVG installed. The PC has been taken over at startup so I'm typing this on my Mac laptop.

I got a message an hour or so back from AVG stating that I had a trojan/virus or something so I selected "remove completely". I think it was called something like "opodoal.js" but I can't find this on Google so I may have it misspelt. I noted that it was located in the C:/programdata folder.

After it had ben removed I closed down and restarted. On restart I got he same message so the virus hadn't actually been "completely removed" after all. I told AVG again to remove it and also went into the programdata folder and saw three other files there with similar names - (opod??? something). I clicked on one to see its properties - can't remember them now - then did the same with a second file - I think this one ended in ".pad" Then it all went downhill.

My computer froze a moment then I got some obviously fake page purporting to come from a UK police organisation telling me I'd violated some UK criminal code (we don't have those) etc etc etc. usual rubbish stuff, and telling me that I had to pay a fine within 72 hours and offered payment boxes.... for wiring the money...

Worst problem is that I can't get out of this screen without hitting the off button. Can't see any other open windows as they seem to be behind this one. A restart then results in the startup process ending in my desktop icons seemingly disappearing and I can reach nothing so can't fix it. The the "police" page pops up again.

I can get to the setup menu (del key) or Boot Options (F12 - suggesting other disk startup options). I don't feel comfortable with that and can't find a way to get into safe mode so am resorting to asking you kind folks what I should do. Obviously, I'd like to be able to get into the DOS or something. Also, I can't paste any logfile details at the moment.

I should mention that I've disconnected the PC from the router.
Any suggestions? Really up a creek here..... :-(

Many thanks for any help,

TB
