I know a decent amount of stuff when it comes to computers but this one has me stumped and there's no information online about it either. I'll try anything you want me to if you can try and help me out.
I work on computers for friends and family, usually viruses and stuff. A friend gave me this 'Compaq 6715b' laptop with a brand new harddrive and asked me to install windows for him. I installed windows 7 but when I began doing windows updates, I got a white screen, which locks up the computer, and it tells me to ship it to some random address. Naturally I thought it was a virus although I haven't even installed anything yet. I reinstalled windows 7 and again it came up. I then installed windows 8 thinking maybe it wouldn't effect win8 but again, it came up. I flashed bios with the newest version as well as reset bios settings, from bios and pulling the bios battery and STILL this white screen comes up! I googled it and only one mention of it exists but isn't helpful. I've opened the harddrive with my other computer and checked autoruns but there's nothing set to startup with the computer other then the touchpad...
Do you have any ideas of what I can run on this harddrive to figure out what is causing the white screen and block it? Any idea how the white screen could survive a new harddrive and new bios?
Also I'd like to note I don't think the computer is actually locking up, this screen is 'blocking' my actions. I've been able to open and have the command prompt open white the white screen is up before and I could see my mouse being pulled on the right side of the screen. It eventually pushed the command prompt behind it as well though.
