Mouse unpredictable

My mouse opens files and sites, sometimes when it gets near a shortcut, others recalling previous open pages. In Word and while writing emails, things get out of control. When I try to place the cursor in a particular spot, different things happen instead. I have tried to change mice with same result.

My AV, MS Security Essentials detected a virus which happened at about the same time as my mouse problems. I only discovered this yea«sterday and followed advice to delete it. I thought there would be some sort of log, but can't find it and now I don't know what it was.
