Virus/Malware help needed on Macbook Pro

Hello, My first post in a long time on here. My brother gave me his 2011 13" Macbook Pro to back up his photos etc. Upon receiving it, I noticed it was very slow. I checked the storage (only half used), ran disk utility (everything ok), tried 2 free cleaning programs (onyx, ccleaner), ran 2 malware programs (malwarebytes, avast) Malwarebytes found nothing. Avast found 3 infections (86 unable to scan). Still running horrible. OS is old (Yosemite 10.10.5) I gave up trying to use Time Machine due to errors, so I tried to simply drag the pictures folder onto a 120gb USB stick. After 20 hours the transfer quit unexpectedly and now the usb is corrupted? I am usually able to figure out mac issues but this thing is messed up over my head. I was thinking of updating the OS but I don't think it's a good idea with all the errors etc. I don't want to lose the photos on it, but I can't back it up at this point. Such a simple task has been become a nightmare. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
