Avast ad or ...?

Was opening/starting Avast this AM when I noticed a 'prompt' on the startup screen. My choices are 'signin/245karma'. Selecting the '245karma' gets me an 'add this device to your account' alert.

What gives here?

Is there a 'user tutorial' for the Avast (free) software out there?

While I'm whining, any recommendations on a good (free) firewall?
