A friend of mine brought me her Window 7 computer that was blue screening on her and she wanted me to check it out. She has only Microsoft Essentials and a Spybot Program for protection. I ran it and was advised to make a boot cd of Defender. I ran it and found this virus which created its own partion of 100mb and 29mb used. This virus is still there. Im not too concerned about it, we are going to reformat the drive and reinstall the system.
Will I have to do a low level format? Repartition the drive?
That is not the only problem though.
She wants me to save her five years of photos and Microsoft office documents for her. I have a 2 Terrabyte external USB drive I wanna hook up to it to transfer these files. Will it be safe to do this or will it transfer that virus to my external drive? I thought trojans were just set in .exe files and not riders of other file types. These are the only files execpt a few Microsoft Powerpoint documents she made that she wants to keep. There are a boatload of mp3's shed like to keep but not necessary. Would those be safe to transfer to my external drive?
Any ideas on this virus and these questions would be a great help.
