Hello TechSupportForum :)
I am currently having issues with my asus laptop; since two days ago, it has been behaving strange:
1. The files/folders that I used to save on the desktop (under my account, i.e. user) are missing. I can only find some of the program shortcut such as Mozilla Firefox, Nitro Reader, AVG2013, etc.
However, sometimes those shortcuts, when double-clicked, would work and sometimes wouldn't. When would work, the program behaves as if it were the first time I used it, with the welcome screen or tips... When wouldn't work, it pops up a small dialog, stating at the top of the bar: "Windows Security" then at the next part it says: "These files can't be opened. Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened." And then there is a link to "Why these files can't be opened?"
When I click the link, it takes me to the Windows Help and support dialog; which shows the setting for the Internet Explorer, such as the zone for local, intranet, etc...
One weird thing about this first issue is that when I look in the C:\windows\Users\User\Desktop ; my files and folders are there. But again, sometimes are okay to open, sometimes aren't.
Like when I chose to save the dds.scr on my desktop, it was saved well...but I wasn't able to locate in the desktop. Then I tried running the file without saving it in the first place, but there was no such option...then I tried changing the default location of downloaded file to firefox's original version (Download folder). Again I wasn't able to locate the file in there...then I tried using the right-click option to Open the containing folder, it brought me to Windows/System32/config/systemprofile/desktop, but with no single file/folder in it.
Last trial was running the downloaded file right from the pop-up dialog of the downloaded file. There was "Run" option, it said "dds.scr is running in silent mode", but then there was no txt files popped up; nor could I find any txt file on the desktop. I gave it up until here.
Oh, forgot to mention that I also downloaded and saved the dds in drive D: , then moved it to the desktop...with this, the dds wouldn't run.
With GMER, I chose to extract GMER (after moving it form drive D: to the desktop), but couldn't find the extracted files. However whenn I tried to extract it again, it asked me whether or not I would want to replace the previous file, meaning that it was successfully extracted but not appeared/shown on the desktop. So, GMER was not run at all.
Tried with the search from windows start button, it doesn't detect any of the dds or gmer. In fact, any search will give the same result as no files are found...except if I search for Paint or calculator.
2. Weird audio playing in the background
Sorry, not meaning anything by mentioning this, but after I extracted the GMER (which I could find the extracted files), suddenly some audio played in the background, telling the information of some mobile phone (Moto G or something) it continued for a couple of minutes...two days ago there were no weird audio playing at all, maybe because at that time I wasn't able to connect to the internet and open the firefox from this laptop.
I myself were quite surprised to find that this time the firefox and the laptop could be connected to the gsm network through the modem.
3. A folder of 'Users' appeared in my current desktop.
When clicking it, I will see a windows of some folders: Contacts, Desktop, Desktop (two folders with the same name), Favorite, Favorite (two folders with the same name again), My Music, My Documents, etc. Only those two folders with the same name. All folders are empty.
When I look in the User Accounts under the Control Panel, there is only 'User' Account with administrator right.
4. Preparing your desktop.
Upon inserting the password of my user account, a moment before the Windows boot in, a phrase of "preparing your desktop" appears for a couple of seconds. I don't recall reading such phrase when the laptop was in good condition.
I am sorry, but there is no files to post in here, as required by the forum.
Note: I might not be able to get the internet working for next time (as sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't), the same situation applies to the browser (Firefox). Please let me know what to if I really can't get the browser opened and/or the internet connected.
Could somebody please give me a help?
Thanks,
Altec84.
