Sweetpacks virus?

A very long time ago, I accidently installed the Sweetpacks toolbar when I was installing something (don't remember what). I uninstalled it, but I don't think I got rid of it all. All of a sudden yesterday, I opened IE and it opened two tabs, one being Sweetpacks, another being my normal homepage. I uninstalled another add-on I apparently missed, though I have no idea why it all of a sudden did this, as I have not installed anything recently. I searched Sweetpacks and apparently either it's a virus, or there's a virus that installs Sweetpacks or something? I found some very complicated intructions about how to remove it, but I did not have time to try it, and I didn't know if I could trust the source or not, so I just posted here. I ran AVG free edition and it didn't find anything. I don't know if I just can't get rid of this darn thing or if it's a virus.
